Postpartum

The birth of a child is celebrated. The recovery of the mother often isn’t.

Postpartum is one of the most significant physiological transitions a woman’s body goes through, and one of the most underserved. At Senuri, we offer clinical, whole-body support for the weeks and months after birth, because how you recover matters.

What we see

Postpartum in New York City arrives alongside everything else: the pressure to bounce back, to function, to feel like yourself again, often before the body has had any real chance to recover.

The hormonal shift after birth is one of the most dramatic the body experiences. Estrogen and progesterone drop almost immediately. The stress-response system is thrown off balance. Sleep deprivation compounds everything. And underneath it all, who you are is quietly shifting too.

Acupuncture works in that space, not as a replacement for obstetric or mental health care, but as a complementary layer of support that cares for the whole person.

How acupuncture supports postpartum recovery

Hormonal Recovery

After birth, the body undergoes one of its most rapid hormonal shifts: estrogen and progesterone drop dramatically, the HPA axis recalibrates, and the body begins the work of physical and hormonal recovery. Acupuncture supports this transition by helping regulate hormonal signaling, supporting the stress response, and addressing the physical depletion many patients feel in the weeks and months after birth.

Postpartum Anxiety and Mood

Postpartum anxiety and low mood are among the most common, and least supported, experiences of new motherhood. They aren’t character flaws or signs of failure. They’re neurochemical. Estrogen’s rapid decline affects serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. These are the systems that regulate mood, emotional tone, and the experience of calm. Acupuncture may support mood regulation and ease the nervous system dysregulation that underlies many postpartum emotional experiences. We always work in coordination with your mental health care team.

Fatigue and Energy Restoration

Postpartum fatigue isn’t only about sleep deprivation, though that’s real and significant. It’s also about the depletion of the body’s core resources after pregnancy and birth. In East Asian medicine, this is understood as a deficiency of qi, blood, and kidney essence, the foundational reserves that pregnancy draws on so heavily. Acupuncture works to help rebuild these reserves, support energy, and restore the vitality new motherhood demands.

Sleep Support

Sleep disruption in the postpartum period is driven by hormonal shifts, nervous system dysregulation, and the demands of a newborn. Acupuncture supports sleep through nervous system regulation, hormonal balance, and the deep parasympathetic rest many patients feel during and after treatment, helping the body make the most of the sleep it does get.

Physical Recovery

Birth is physically demanding, whether vaginal or cesarean, and it leaves the body needing real support. Acupuncture can support tissue healing, ease post-birth inflammation, address musculoskeletal tension and pain, and support the body’s return toward its pre-pregnancy baseline. We always follow the timing and guidance of your obstetric team.

The Emotional Transition

Becoming a mother reshapes identity in ways that are profound and rarely fully acknowledged. Joy, grief, anxiety, love, overwhelm, often all at once. At Senuri, we treat the whole person, and that includes what she’s carrying emotionally, not just physically. We approach the emotional side of postpartum with the same seriousness as physical recovery, because the two are inseparable.

Working alongside your care team

Senuri is a complement to obstetric and mental health care, never a replacement for it.

We work in coordination with OB-GYNs, midwives, pelvic floor physical therapists, and mental health providers across New York City. Postpartum acupuncture can typically begin from two to four weeks after birth, earlier or later depending on your recovery.

What to expect

Your first visit is a 90-minute consultation.

We review your birth experience, your current symptoms, and your sleep, mood, energy, and physical recovery. We ask how your body is recovering, whether your cycle has returned, and what the postpartum period has felt like for you so far.

In the early postpartum period, more regular treatment supports hormonal recovery, energy, and emotional regulation, easing in frequency as your body settles. There’s no wrong time to start. We begin where you are.

This may be right for you if
  • You’re in the postpartum period and want support with hormonal recovery, energy, mood, or physical wellbeing
  • You’re experiencing postpartum anxiety or low mood and want integrative support alongside your existing care
  • You’re recovering physically after birth and want whole-body support during that transition
  • You feel depleted, overwhelmed, or not quite like yourself, and want care that addresses all of it
  • You simply want a space that holds you during one of life’s most significant transitions

What you’re doing is profound. Let your body be supported through it all.
