Pain is not just a physical experience. It’s the body’s most direct signal that something needs attention.
Whether it’s chronic tension that never fully releases, the headache that returns every week, or the injury that won’t quite heal, at Senuri we address the systems driving pain: circulation, inflammation, nervous system regulation, and structural tension.
What we see
Pain in New York City comes in many forms.
The chronic back tension that builds through the week. The migraines that arrive without warning. The sports injury that healed, but not quite completely. The joint pain that worsens in winter.
Most patients who come to Senuri for pain are already doing other things: physical therapy, chiropractic care, medication, or simply managing. Acupuncture works alongside all of it, addressing the neurological, circulatory, and inflammatory dimensions of pain, as well as the emotional weight that chronic pain inevitably carries.

How acupuncture supports pain & recovery
Nervous System Regulation and Central Sensitization
Chronic pain isn’t simply a signal from damaged tissue. It’s also a learned response of the nervous system. Over time, the nervous system can become sensitized, amplifying pain signals even in the absence of ongoing tissue damage. This is why chronic pain often persists long after an injury has technically healed. Acupuncture has been shown to modulate pain signaling through its effects on the central and peripheral nervous system, reducing sensitization, influencing the body’s own endogenous opioid pathways, and supporting its natural pain-regulation mechanisms.
Inflammation and Circulation
Many pain conditions are driven or maintained by localized inflammation and impaired circulation to affected tissues. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory markers, promote local circulation, and support tissue repair. For patients with joint pain, chronic muscular tension, or repetitive strain, improving blood flow and easing inflammatory tone in the affected area is a central focus of treatment.
Muscle Tension and Structural Release
Chronic muscular tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and back, is one of the most common presentations we see. Acupuncture works directly on trigger points and areas of myofascial restriction, releasing held tension and restoring normal muscle function. Most New Yorkers carry stress physically, and releasing it is often one of the most tangible early effects of treatment.
Headaches and Migraines
Acupuncture has one of its strongest evidence bases in headache and migraine care. Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses support acupuncture as an effective preventive treatment for both tension headaches and migraines, with effects comparable to preventive medication in some studies. At Senuri, we focus on the underlying patterns including hormonal, stress-related, postural, and circulatory reasons that may drive recurrent headaches.
Sports Recovery and Performance
For active patients, runners, cyclists, gym-goers, athletes of every kind, acupuncture supports both recovery and performance. It supports tissue repair, eases inflammation, helps the nervous system recover from training load, and addresses the musculoskeletal imbalances that lead to injury over time. Many patients find that regular acupuncture as part of their routine reduces injury frequency and supports faster recovery between sessions.
The Psychological Dimension of Pain
Chronic pain is exhausting, physically, emotionally, and psychologically. The relationship between pain and mood, anxiety, and sleep runs both ways: pain disrupts sleep, poor sleep amplifies pain, anxiety heightens the nervous system’s pain response. At Senuri, we treat the whole picture. Addressing nervous system regulation, sleep, and the emotional weight of living with chronic pain isn’t separate from treating the pain itself. It’s part of it.
The Eastern Medicine Framework
East Asian medicine has understood pain through a simple principle for thousands of years: where qi, blood, and body fluids flow freely, there is comfort; where they stagnate, there is pain. Treatment works to restore that flow, easing the stagnation that so often underlies chronic tension and pain.
Working alongside your care team
Senuri works as a complement to conventional pain management.
We work in coordination with physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, sports medicine physicians, and primary care providers across New York City. Acupuncture integrates naturally alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, medication, and other approaches, and is often most effective in combination.
For patients recovering from surgery, we ask for clearance from your surgeon before beginning. And if you’re experiencing new, severe, or unexplained pain, we’d always encourage you to seek medical evaluation first.
What to expect
Your first visit is a 90-minute consultation.
We review your full pain history, onset, location, quality, triggers, and what makes it better or worse, alongside your broader health picture: stress, sleep, digestion, emotional state, and lifestyle. Pain rarely exists in isolation from the rest of what the body is carrying.
For acute injuries and sports recovery, treatment is usually more frequent at first, easing as the body responds. For chronic pain, consistent treatment tends to produce the most meaningful results, with frequency adjusting as patterns shift. There’s no wrong time to start. We begin where you are.
