Perimenopause and menopause is not a decline. It’s a transition, and it deserves real support.
The hormonal shift of perimenopause is one of the most significant physiological transitions a woman’s body goes through. Acupuncture offers clinically grounded, personalized support for navigating it, with or without hormone therapy.
What’s actually happening
Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, usually beginning in the 40s, though it can start earlier, and lasts anywhere from two to ten years. During this time, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, often dramatically, before eventually declining. It’s these fluctuations, as much as the eventual decline, that drive the most disruptive symptoms.
And yet perimenopause remains one of the most underserved phases of women’s health. For many women, the conventional options, hormone replacement therapy, or sometimes antidepressants or sleep medication, are genuinely helpful. But they aren’t the only path. Acupuncture offers another, one used in East Asian medicine for centuries, and with increasing support by modern research.

How acupuncture supports the perimenopausal transition
Hot Flash and Vasomotor Symptom Reduction
Hot flashes are driven by dysregulation of the hypothalamic thermostat, the mechanism that governs the body’s temperature regulation in response to declining estrogen. Acupuncture has been shown to influence hypothalamic function and reduce the frequency and severity of vasomotor symptoms.
Sleep and the Hormonal-Sleep Connection
Sleep disruption in perimenopause has several converging drivers. Progesterone, which supports sleep through its calming, GABA-modulating effects, declines. Cortisol reactivity rises. Hot flashes interrupt the night. And the nervous system is generally more dysregulated during this hormonal flux. Acupuncture can address several of these at once: supporting sleep, easing cortisol, calming vasomotor symptoms, and activating the parasympathetic state needed for deep rest.
Mood, Anxiety, and the Hormonal-Emotional Connection
The mood changes of perimenopause aren’t psychological in origin. They’re neurochemical. Estrogen modulates serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. As estrogen fluctuates and declines, so does the stability of these neurotransmitter systems, producing the irritability, anxiety, low mood, and emotional volatility that many perimenopausal patients experience as disorienting and out of character. Acupuncture’s effects on serotonin, dopamine, and GABA are directly relevant here.
Working Alongside HRT
Acupuncture and hormone replacement therapy aren’t mutually exclusive, and for many patients, they work best together. Some patients at Senuri are on HRT and want complementary support for symptoms that remain despite therapy. Others aren’t candidates for HRT or prefer to avoid it and want effective non-hormonal support. Others are still deciding. In every case, we work with your existing medical team and support whatever approach is most appropriate for your health history and preferences.
Kidney Yin Support: The Eastern Medicine Framework
In East Asian medicine, the perimenopausal transition is understood as a decline in kidney yin, the body’s foundational cooling, moistening, and nourishing resource. When kidney yin is insufficient, yang becomes relatively excess, producing heat symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, insomnia, and dryness. Treatment at Senuri is directed at nourishing kidney yin, clearing deficiency heat, and supporting the transition in a way that works with the body’s natural process.
What the research says
The evidence base for acupuncture in perimenopause and menopause has grown substantially in the past decade.
Randomized controlled trials, including research on breast cancer survivors for whom HRT isn’t an option, have found that acupuncture significantly reduces hot flash frequency and severity compared to sham treatment. Findings support acupuncture as an effective and well-tolerated option for vasomotor symptom reduction, whether used alongside conventional care or on its own.
Research on acupuncture and perimenopausal sleep, mood, and cognitive symptoms is growing and directionally consistent, and the mechanistic evidence for acupuncture’s effects on the neurochemical and neuroendocrine systems involved is compelling.
What to expect
Your first visit is a 90-minute consultation.
We take a full history of your perimenopausal experience, when symptoms began, how they’ve evolved, what your cycle has been doing, and how your sleep, mood, energy, and overall sense of your body have changed. We also ask about your broader health history and your current approach to managing symptoms, including any medications or supplements you’re taking.
Many patients with vasomotor symptoms notice some reduction in hot flash frequency within the early sessions. More comprehensive changes across the full symptom picture typically develop over a consistent course of care. Perimenopause is a multi-year transition, and many patients continue with ongoing, spaced-out maintenance treatment throughout it.
We work alongside your existing medical team and welcome coordination with your gynecologist, internist, or menopause specialist.
This may be right for you if
You’re in perimenopause and your symptoms are affecting your quality of life, sleep, mood, or sense of self
You’re not a candidate for HRT, or prefer a non-hormonal approach
You’re on HRT and want complementary support for symptoms that remain
